We know Mother’s Day can be a beautiful and fun event for some people, but others may not be able to enjoy the day.

Whether you’re in need of some motherly advice, searching for a story to relate to, or simply doing some Sunday reading, we have compiled beautiful, honest, and moving advice to share.

How have your notions of what it means to be a woman changed over your lifetime?  

I’ve learned that to be a woman is to endure. Every woman I know has gone through trials and tribulations that most people are unaware of. The older I get I realize that being a woman is not about what you look like, how you dress, and how you act in the public eye – it’s about resiliency that is unmatched, messy, and beautiful.  

What was the first year of motherhood like for you?  

This is an especially difficult mother’s day for me, as I recently went through my fourth pregnancy loss. Most people in my life are unaware of this and I’m only now becoming comfortable with the idea of discussing the notion of loss and motherhood. I hope to one day answer this question with joy, but what I’ve learned is that the journey of motherhood may also be filled with grief and heartbreak. Perhaps my experiences will help prepare me better for motherhood one day. 

What has your mother taught you? 

The importance of speaking your mind, taking good care of your skin when you’re young, and not feeling guilty about rest. She also taught me the fundamentals of style, an appreciation for art, and that it’s never too late to follow your passion. My mom is a very talented painter and is now pursuing her career as an artist.

Best advice from your mother?

The best advice my mother (Diti Katona) ever gave to me was to always question rules or ways of doing things. She’d always say that rules were created by people, and are not set in stone, and it’s ok to ask questions and not follow a specific way of doing something just because that’s how it’s been done in the past.

Best advice from your mother?

My mom has given me so much good advice I am unsure what is the best but here are a few “You are responsible for your own happiness you can never rely on somebody else to make you happy it comes from within” and “No one can tell you how you feel your feelings” both lessons has seen me through some dark times. I am so grateful for my mom. She is my best friend.

The most valuable lesson I’ve learned from my mom is contentment — being grateful for what I have, and not comparing myself to others.

The key to a good and long life is to not worry.  Despite the challenges that life will bring, know that inevitably they will pass.

“My Mom always told me to save my pennies for a rainy day. As a banker, having financial safety meant a lot to her. But it went beyond money. My Mom raised my twin brother and I, on her own. She demonstrated strength, determination and bravery as she navigated her life as a single woman. She taught me, that I alone control my destiny.
