CANNABIS 101: TERPENES

Terpenes are aromatic compounds that give plants their characteristic scents. In nature, there are over 20,000 terpenes, and to date, scientists have discovered more than 200 different terpenes are in cannabis. Terpenes are the basis of aromatherapy and other traditional medicine practices. In cannabis, terpenes contribute to the “entourage effect.” The entourage effect refers to the synergy between the naturally occurring compounds in cannabis that make the healing properties of the plant more accessible and effective. All MADGE AND MERCER MODERN APOTHECARY products include a unique combination of terpenes, CBD and micro-amount of THC to ensure the healing effects of CBD are activated.

ALPHA-PINENE

Alpha-pinene is the most common terpene in the natural world. It may not be such a surprise to learn that alpha-pinene smells like pine, as this terpene gives evergreen trees their distinctively sweet and refreshing scent. Alpha-pinene may also counteract the anxiety that can sometimes accompany THC consumption.

Also found in parsley, dill, basil, rosemary, and some citrus.

LIMONENE

Limonene has a distinctly fresh and zesty aroma. The potential therapeutic effects of limonene include boosting serotonin in the parts of the brain associated with anxiety and depression. It also has stress-relieving and sleep-promoting properties.

Also found in citrus rinds, rosemary, and peppermint.

LINALOOL

Linalool is one of the more common terpenes in cannabis. It has a distinctive floral scent and used in aromatherapy to promote relaxation. It’s also known for its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and neuroprotective properties. As well, for anti-depressant, sedative, and pain-relieving properties.

Also found in lavender, coriander, basil, and rosewood.

TERPINOLENE

Terpinolene has a fresh, clean scent, and is a common ingredient in soap and cleaning products for its antibacterial and antifungal qualities. Studies are also looking into how this terpene may reduce the risk of cancer and the growth of cancer cells. In cannabis, it is believed to have an uplifting effect.

Also found in lilacs, nutmeg, cumin, tea tree, and apples.
